Tasting Notes
An extraordinary bouquet of rich black plums and cherries complemented by an earthy, forest floor character and sweet spice. On the palate the wine has bright acidity, ripe tannins, subtle oak and a rich, savoury and slightly chocolatey appeal. A full-bodied and complex wine.
Ageing Potential
This wine is delicious now but will continue to develop over ten years from vintage.
The Vineyard
The grapes are from Kasteelsig vineyard, owned by Billy (Guillermo) Hughes, and are organically certified. Soil is red Glenrosa with some Oakleaf – shale-rich duplex soils. The vineyards are not irrigated.
Winemaking
Most of the grapes were destemmed and gently crushed into small, open bins with manual punch downs; 30% were whole-bunch fermented. Malolactic conversion and maturation took place in small French oak barrels (30% new) for 8 months.
Total production 1,200 bottles.
